Commentary is an important element of any creative process. For commercial producers the commentary before the work is produced (including pitch/ concept/ script/ brand) is as important as is the commentary of the work after it is completed. Such pre-production commentary may have little to do with academia – one enterprising producer described this pre-production commentary process as “the entertainment end of the banking industry”. It is certainly true that forums such as Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC) generally have a very limited input from academia.
However, when the production process involves cross cultural filmmaking of the type we are projecting in the Cultural Diplomacy Research Series all kind of issues need to be addressed that go beyond “the entertainment end of the banking industry”.
In this second Conference-Festival in the Cultural Diplomacy Research Series we explore the relationship between the commentary and the completed works and commentary that may have inspired the work but is generally ignored by the producers.
